Dear Happy Asses,
I am sure I have heard it used before, but the first time I really paid attention to the principle of, “If you could wave a magic wand and have what you wanted,” was in a Ninja sales class. At first, it seemed even a tad hokey… and that is saying something coming from me. I am not afraid of a little woo woo, a little mystical thinking, or tapping into deeply held dreams and spiritual desires.
What I did not think, however, was that I could use something like that in my career. But I have. And I do. And truthfully, I probably use it on myself the most.
Here is the more “science-y” way of explaining the magic wand principle: it is a coaching and therapeutic technique designed to bypass logical constraints, fear, and limiting beliefs so we can uncover our deepest desires, core values, and true priorities.
I saw this happen in real time in a video the other day. The person’s shoulders dropped, their eyes moved upward, and even their lips softened. You could see it… they were seeing what was possible instead of thinking of all the constraints and all the reasons why not.
I know from personal experience that the more I tap into what I truly desire, the more I begin to move in my most authentic direction. When we DON’T allow ourselves that dream approach, we get pinned in by what the world says we can do.
I think Henry Ford figured that out many years ago when he said, “If you think you can or you think you can’t, you are right!!!” And I think most of the time, we spend far too much energy looking for the limits… for the reasons it can’t be done. We wear “reasonable” and “logical” like badges of honor.
I, for one, would rather wave a magic wand.
And truthfully, I am most concerned with exercising that wand in my own life. I want to wave it in a way that erases doubt, that softens fear, that clears a path toward what I know I am called to do. Because I also know this… when one person has the courage to wave their wand, others start to believe they can too.
If I could wave a magic wand, I would use it to help all of God’s children realize their value… and the value of their neighbors. I would imagine a world where we are all lifting each other up, helping each other along, cheering each other forward.
And then I stop and smile a little… because the truth is, I already get to witness that every single day in my sweet company. It seems I am already in the presence of a whole lot of wand wavers.
I started reading about wand wavers at a young age, but like many people, I felt a little ashamed of my lofty dreams and desires. I thought it might be best to tone it down a bit.
But the older I get, the less interested I am in dimming anything. In fact, I am more convinced than ever that I want to do more wand waving, more dreaming… and take a whole bunch of folks with me.
And I am so thankful that I get to be in the presence of others who feel that way too. The more I surround myself with big dreamers and doers, the more I feel pulled forward… stretched in the best way… reminded that there is always more possibility waiting than I can currently see.
And that feels like exactly where I am meant to be.
Grateful,
Karen
